About Camp Smarter

Camp Smarter is a camping guide site for beginners — especially first- and second-year car campers and hikers who are overwhelmed by gear lists and jargon. Our promise is in the tagline: better trips with less gear.

What this site is

Most beginner camping advice is either a 47-item gear list designed to sell you things, or gatekeeping disguised as wisdom. We do neither. Camp Smarter teaches the skills that actually matter — pitching a tent, picking a campsite, staying warm, cooking real food, storing food safely, and leaving a site cleaner than you found it — and answers three questions in every guide: what actually matters, what it costs, and what you can safely skip.

Alongside the guides, we build free interactive tools that turn general advice into a plan for your actual trip, like the Camping Packing Checklist Generator, the Tent Size Picker, and the Hiking Pace Planner.

How we evaluate gear

  • Real prices and numbers, not hype. We show what gear actually costs, what it weighs, and what its ratings mean in plain English.
  • Essential-first. Shelter, sleep, food, water, and safety come before upgrades and nice-to-haves — always.
  • “Buy nothing” is a valid verdict. Our guides regularly recommend borrowing, renting, buying used, or simply going without when that beats a new purchase.
  • Safety is non-negotiable. Fire, weather, wildlife, water, and Leave No Trace rules are treated as the reason you get to come back next weekend — not as a lecture.
  • No pay-to-play. Commission rates never determine our recommendations. See our affiliate disclosure for the full rulebook.

Who it’s for

First-time campers planning a weekend at a campground, families figuring out camping with kids, hikers stretching a day trip into an overnight, and anyone who suspects the expensive gadget is not the point. If that’s you, start with the beginner camping checklist — it cuts the giant gear lists down to what actually matters.

How we make money

Some links on this site are affiliate links — retailers pay us a commission when you buy through them, at no extra cost to you. We may also run display ads and sell our own low-cost guides. The plain-English version is in our affiliate disclosure, and our data practices are in our privacy policy.
