Tent Size Picker
A "sleeps 4" tent fits four mummy bags pressed shoulder-to-shoulder — and not much else. Tell us how many people actually sleep inside and how you pack, and we'll recommend the tent capacity you really need, the floor dimensions to shop for, and what the packed weight should be.

What tent capacities actually mean
Tent makers rate capacity by how many standard 24-inch-wide sleeping pads fit side by side — gear has nowhere to go in that math. This picker budgets roughly 18 sq ft per sleeper for minimalist trips and 27 sq ft per sleeper for comfort, then matches you to the smallest standard tent that clears it:
| Capacity | Typical floor | Typical floor area | Packed-weight range |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2-person | 4'9" × 7'1" | ~34 sq ft | 3–4.5 lb |
| 3-person | 5'8" × 7'6" | ~43 sq ft | 4.5–6.5 lb |
| 4-person | 8'0" × 7'2" | ~57 sq ft | 6–9 lb |
| 6-person | 10'0" × 8'4" | ~83 sq ft | 9–13 lb |
| 8-person | 14'0" × 9'0" | ~126 sq ft | 12–17.5 lb |
| 10-person | 18'0" × 12'0" | ~216 sq ft | 15–22 lb |
The weight ranges assume 3-season trail tents (poles, stakes, stuff sack included). Big-box family tents at the same capacity often weigh more — that's fine if you're car camping 20 feet from the trunk.
