Campfire Cooking Time Estimator

Cooking over a campfire isn't like an oven — the heat source matters as much as the clock. Pick your dish and cooking method to get a realistic time estimate, the fuel prep it needs, and the doneness cues that tell you it's actually ready.

What's for dinner?

Most campfire cooking belongs on coals — flames are for boiling and toasting, not for dinner. Some dishes only work with certain methods; the estimator will tell you.

Fuel prep: the step everyone skips

Almost every dish below assumes you burn the fire down to a bed of coals first — about 30–45 minutes of burning hardwood or lump charcoal before you cook. Cooking over tall flames gives you charred outsides and raw insides. Plan the fire-starting time, not just the cooking time.
